“Food for Thought Dinners”  for Lasagna, Conversation, Quotes and Questions,

By Joyce Ray

Fifteen people gathered for the November “Food for Thought” dinner sponsored by the Christian Education Board. The topic: “How to Find or Create Sabbath in the Midst of Our Demanding Schedules.”

In between lasagna bites, we passed a bowl of wisdom – quotes and questions about finding time for God. Our responses were thoughtful and sometimes uproarious. We grappled with the meaning of Jesus’ words, “Don’t worry about anything” in our productivity and consumer-driven society. With lots of laughter and caring, we encouraged and affirmed each person’s efforts to remain connected to God.

As a group, we explored our relationships in terms of vertical and horizontal connections. We talked of the time required to work on horizontal connections – work, school, family and friends. Often, our vertical connection to God is the left-over time! We asked, “What if we made decisions that allowed and fostered reflective time with God? What if we relegated bill-writing, laundry, or any task that demands our Sunday attention to a later time, after we have observed Sabbath with God? What if we created mini-Sabbath moments within each day? What’s the worst that could happen?”

However ready we are to make shifts in our habits and seek Sabbath, on this night, the stories we shared about God working in our lives offered nourishing food for thought.
